Best Coffee Beans for AeroPress by Cup Style

Choose a fruit-led black cup, a chocolate-fruit daily cup or an iced stronger brew. Three exact whole beans have different reasons to buy and skip.

Buyer decision

Choose a cup, then choose a bag

This is a shortlist for US buyers of whole beans using an AeroPress Original-style paper-filter brewer. We required an exact currently identifiable coffee, a full Coffeedant review, a roaster-attributed flavor direction and a documented AeroPress use. We excluded ground-only products, uncertain identities and coffees recommended only by a generic “works for everything” label. [1] [4] [5]

Geometry and Southern Weather have Onyx product-specific recipe blocks; Hair Bender has a Stumptown iced-use suggestion plus the roaster’s general AeroPress recipe. That is an evidence difference, not a ranking of cup quality. A brewer recipe can establish an intended use, but only your actual bag, grinder, water and taste can establish your preference. Coffeedant has not brewed or tasted these coffees.

The decision differs from our pour-over guide: immersion time, stirring, a paper filter and manual pressing replace a cone dripper’s continuous flow. The same bean can taste different under those methods. If you want one bag for espresso and drip instead, use that separate comparison.

Buyer decision

Keep the first brew comparable

Onyx specifies 14 g coffee and 210 g water at 205°F with a medium grind for its AeroPress method. Its sequence includes a 50 g bloom and stir, a pour to 210 g, capping, then an inverted flip and a short press. The displayed guide describes the method as emphasizing body and sweetness. Its same numeric start appears for Geometry and Southern Weather; it is not evidence that their actual cups are identical. [1]

Stumptown’s general upright guide uses 17 g coffee and 220 g water at about 205°F, a finer grind, a stir and a press just before two minutes. The approximate 1:13 ratio is stronger than the Onyx 1:15 start. Do not compare coffees brewed under different ratios and call the difference a bean result. First hold one recipe and paper filter constant; then try the roaster’s approach for the chosen coffee. [4]

If you use an AeroPress Go, XL, Flow Control cap or metal filter, confirm capacity and the manufacturer’s handling guidance. The recipes here are starting points for the cited brewer setup, not guarantees that a marked chamber line equals a weighed water mass. Use a stable vessel and avoid an unsafe inversion when handling hot water. [7]

Reasons to choose

Three first-bag picks

Official Onyx Coffee Lab Geometry whole-bean bag

Fruit-led black cup

Onyx Coffee Lab Geometry

Why: Onyx gives Geometry an explicit AeroPress recipe and describes a washed Ethiopian and Colombian blend that also works as filter coffee.

Tradeoff: The 1:15 recipe is a full cup, not a concentrate; its component lots can rotate.

Skip if: You want dark chocolate first or a fixed single-origin lot.

Official Onyx Coffee Lab Southern Weather whole-bean bag

Chocolate-fruit daily cup

Onyx Coffee Lab Southern Weather

Why: Onyx publishes the same AeroPress starting method and positions this moderate blend as a house filter coffee with chocolate and citrus balance.

Tradeoff: The shared recipe does not prove it tastes better than Geometry; the flavor brief and current bag decide fit.

Skip if: You want a strongly floral cup or a dark, roast-forward coffee.

Official Stumptown Hair Bender coffee bag

Iced, stronger AeroPress

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Hair Bender

Why: Stumptown explicitly names Hair Bender for an iced AeroPress use. Its current whole-bean page identifies a versatile espresso blend.

Tradeoff: The iced suggestion is older and has no exact current Hair Bender dose. Start with the general method, then account for ice dilution.

Skip if: You only want a delicate hot black cup or require a current exact iced recipe.

Use the evidence

An iced cup needs a dilution plan

Stumptown’s older article explicitly recommends Hair Bender in an inverted AeroPress poured over ice. It does not provide a product-specific mass of coffee, brew water or ice. We therefore cannot reproduce a validated exact Hair Bender iced recipe from that article. Its general 17 g/220 g hot method offers a documented starting point, but ice will dilute and cool the cup. Record both brew water and ice before adjusting strength. [4] [6]

An iced AeroPress is hot-brewed coffee cooled with ice; it is not cold brew. If the hot coffee tastes right but the finished drink tastes thin, changing the ice and water balance is a clearer experiment than assuming the bean is wrong. For a cold-extraction decision, read the separate cold-brew bean guide. No claim here says Hair Bender has been compared blind with the Onyx coffees.

Check the delivered bag

Flavor notes describe a roaster’s intended cup, not a promise for every roast date. Both Onyx blends can change components while retaining their named flavor briefs; inspect the current bag and product page. Hair Bender is a named blend, and Stumptown describes citrus, dark chocolate and raisin. Those are roaster notes, not Coffeedant tasting results. [2] [3] [5]

Buy a whole-bean size you can finish while you enjoy it, check the roast date and package condition on arrival, close the bag tightly, store it cool and dry, and grind shortly before brewing. A direct listing does not prove the roast date or shipping condition of the individual bag you receive. This guide does not rank delivered price, stock or discounts; check the current US cart, size, shipping and tax before ordering.

Use the evidence

When another coffee makes more sense

Choose Geometry when a berry and tea-like brief is the point of your black cup. Choose Southern Weather when you prefer a chocolate-led but still fruit-aware daily cup. If neither brief appeals, a documented darker coffee may fit better, but a roast label alone cannot tell you how it will taste in your brewer. The linked full reviews explain each product’s current scope and evidence. [2] [3]

Hair Bender is the most directly named iced AeroPress option here, with a dark-chocolate and citrus brief. If you only make hot coffee and need a current product-specific recipe, the two Onyx options have stronger recipe evidence. If your priority is decaf, use our decaf-by-brew-method guide and verify its suggested method; none of these three is presented as a decaf. [1] [5] [6]

Evidence and limits

How this guide was made

We checked exact US whole-bean identities, current roaster descriptions, published AeroPress methods and our linked full reviews. We selected three different cup intentions, not a sensory winner. Coffeedant did not brew, taste, measure extraction or verify the roast date of a delivered bag.

Onyx’s product-specific recipe blocks and Stumptown’s general method have different scopes. The older Stumptown Hair Bender iced suggestion is marked as such. No price, discount, stock guarantee or owner reliability claim is inferred from a product listing.

Quick answers

AeroPress bean FAQ

Which pick has an exact roaster AeroPress recipe?

Onyx publishes AeroPress blocks for Geometry and Southern Weather: 14 g coffee, 210 g water at 205°F and a medium grind. Check the live guide for its full sequence.

Is Hair Bender only an espresso bean?

No. Stumptown describes the whole-bean blend across brew methods and explicitly suggests it for iced AeroPress in an older roaster article.

Can I use Stumptown’s 17 g/220 g method for Onyx?

It is a reasonable controlled experiment, but it is Stumptown’s general method, not an Onyx recommendation. Keep the method constant when comparing bags.

Is iced AeroPress the same as cold brew?

No. AeroPress brews with hot water here; ice then cools and dilutes it. Cold brew uses a different extraction process.

Did Coffeedant taste and rank these beans?

No. These are research-led fit judgments using current roaster product descriptions, published brewing methods and linked reviews.

Do the blend components stay fixed?

Do not assume so. Check the current roaster record and the delivered roast-date bag for any lot-specific detail.

Should I use a metal filter?

This comparison uses the cited paper-filter methods. A different filter changes the setup; follow the filter and brewer maker’s instructions.
